Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind: The Key to Lasting Transformation

Did you know that approximately 95% of your daily actions and decisions are controlled by a part of your mind you're barely aware of? While we often focus on conscious goal-setting and willpower which is controlled by our conscious mind, the real engine of change lies beneath the surface – in your subconscious mind.
And this really is the missing piece of the puzzle and explains why we can often try so hard to change things with limited success. For when we attempt to create change at the conscious level it is the subconscious programming that continues to run the show. Without changing the wiring of the subconscious it becomes very hard to make meaningful change. We decide we want to lose weight (as a conscious decision) but our subconscious beliefs remain in charge, whatever they may be! If we have a deep rooted subconscious belief such as 'It's so hard to lose weight' then that could explain why we are failing to stick to each diet we try and do not manage to achieve our goal of losing weight. We must first reprogram the subconscious and THEN take conscious meaningful action towards our goal.
The Subconscious Autopilot

Think of your subconscious mind as an autopilot system. It stores every experience, belief, and pattern you've ever internalized, creating automatic responses that require no conscious thought. This efficiency is incredibly useful – imagine having to consciously remember how to drive or type and this is why everyday actions are governed by the conscious mind – but it becomes problematic when the programming of the subconscious doesn't serve you. Freud referenced this is in his iceberg theory, which shows that so much of our patterns and behaviours come from 'under the surface'.
These hidden programs dictate your habits, emotional reactions, self-image, and even what you believe is possible for your health. They're why you might consciously want to get more physically fit but find yourself stuck on the couch instead of going for a walk or a run, or desire healthier eating habits while automatically reaching for comfort foods.
The challenge is clear: true transformation in your wellbeing can only happen when we address what's happening beneath the surface.
Accessing the Control Center
So how do we access and reprogram this powerful internal system? Through my years of wellness coaching, I've found guided meditation to be the most effective gateway.
Meditation creates a unique brain state – that drowsy, half-asleep zone where your conscious mind relaxes its grip. Neuroscience shows that this state, characterized by alpha and theta brainwaves, provides direct access to your subconscious. It's like finding the backdoor to your internal operating system.
In this receptive state, the critical, analytical part of your mind steps aside, allowing new programming to take root. We're literally creating new automatic patterns that align with your conscious desires for better health and wellbeing.
Creating Lasting Change

When a client begins working with me, we use guided meditation to access this receptive state. Once there, we introduce new beliefs, perspectives, and patterns that serve their wellness goals. Over time, these new programs become the default – changing behaviours effortlessly because the change happens at the source.
One client came to me struggling with chronic stress and poor sleep patterns despite knowing all the "right things" to do. Through our work accessing the subconscious, we discovered and transformed deep programming around self-care and rest. Within weeks, they reported naturally prioritizing sleep, incorporating movement throughout their day, and feeling more energized – changes that felt natural rather than forced.
The beauty of this approach is its sustainability. When your subconscious alignment matches your conscious wellness desires, you're no longer fighting yourself. Change doesn't require constant willpower because your autopilot is now steering you toward holistic health.
Your First Step
Want to experience this for yourself? Try this simple wellness practice:
Set aside five minutes in a quiet space. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing until you feel your body relax. As you drift into that drowsy, comfortable state, simply repeat a short positive phrase that supports your wellbeing, such as "My body deserves nurturing movement" or "I naturally choose foods that energize me." The key is reaching that half-asleep state where your conscious mind is relaxed enough to allow these new ideas to sink deeper. I find this easier in the morning upon waking when we are already in that state but we all need to find our own way and what works best for us!
With consistent practice, you'll begin noticing subtle shifts in your automatic thoughts and behaviors around health. This is your subconscious reprogramming in action.
Remember, the most powerful changes in your wellbeing happen below the surface. By learning to access and reprogram your subconscious mind, you're not just changing what you do – you're transforming your relationship with health at the deepest level.
